A Twitter About Tweeting

Recently a new word has entered our everyday language. Used initially by just a few, ‘Twitter’ is now being commented on by the media and soon enough we will find the word in our dictionaries alongside Google, email and other such computer jargon. So what is Twitter all about and how can you use it to grow your business?

To put it simply, Twitter is the place where you find people talking and quite possibly, the beginning to your new, easy and extremely cost-effective marketing campaign. Think of it as the water cooler of the future, where ideas are spread, recommendations are made and friendships created.

One quick word of explanation. A twitter message is limited to 140 characters and when you send such a message it is called a ‘tweet’.

Four ways Twitter can grow your business – starting today!

1. Exposure. Particularly important for new companies though valuable for all. In a single ‘tweet’ thousands of people can be informed about any part of your business which you decide to tell them about. Would you like feedback on your new product or to advertise your open day for free? Both are easily can be easily achieved in just a matter of seconds.

2. Traffic to your website. We all know that creating your website is just the beginning and it is when people visit, that the real value of the website comes about. Your Twitter profile conveniently includes a link to your website - directing traffic there. And it is easy and acceptable (almost expected) that you will include a link to your website in your ‘tweet’s. It is quite possibly how you found this very article.

3. Connecting with potential customer. We all know that ‘people buy from people’ so why not expand your network by searching other peoples’ ‘tweet’s. Within Twitters’ search page you will find the advanced search function, this allows you to search on any word or phrase in any location. For instance if I am looking for potential customers for my soap making business, I would search for soap within 100kms of New Zealand.

With the results displayed you can choose to follow the people who have made the ‘tweet’ and/or if appropriate reply directly to their ‘tweet’. When used correctly this is a very powerful tool indeed!

4. Ranking. One hidden gem with Twitter, is that helps your Google Ranking! How? Because Google places value on how many websites link to your own website, it views Twitter and all the ‘tweet’s which link to your website as an incoming link and thus raising your Google ranking.

Just one last thought before you launch into the Twittersphere. If you are investing time into building relationships and directly new traffic to your website – make sure it is up to standard!
